Logica Football Club
PLAYER OF THE MILLENNIUM
The Nominees
No. 2 - DAVID DAY

If the selected candidate were to be chosen on pure footballing ability then bookmakers would not be willing to quote odds on the award going to Dave Day. He is quite simply, the greatest footballing talent I have ever had the fortune to play with. His time with Logica FC was short and some time ago but his contribution during his short stay is reflected in his nomination tonight.

He was recommended to the club by Mr Peter Venis and I guess, like the rest of us at the time, my first inclination was to think "Oh no - not another Peter Venis in the team". But from his first touch it was clear that we had access to a special talent. An abiding memory is the speed at which he was able to run with the ball coupled with ability to glide past players as if they weren’t there. He scored many goals but would have scored many more but for the unselfish nature of his play. Mr Keith Sidaway would be the first to hold up his hand in thanks if Dave were here this evening. Many times Sid was the only guy left standing in the opposition box after Dave had dumped the entire defence on its collective arse.

A memory for me was the time that Dave was running rings around the entire opposition team - and their centre forward shouted out something like "Kick the fucker in the knees" which oftentimes was the only solution left to a despairing defence. But it was rare that they could catch him. As a footnote, I took it on myself to apply the same punishment to this centre forward which for some reason he took exception to and chased me round the field.

To you the voters, to those that played with them and to those who did not, I commend Mr David Day.
