After a nightmare start to the season, Logica finally won a game of football at the fifth time of asking. And how! The promise shown the previous week erupted into an exhibition of the kind of football not seen since Brazil won the World Cup in 1970. The video will be selling like hot-cakes in the club-shop for years to come.
All thirteen players contributed in a comprehensive demolition of an Oakway team made to look decidedly average. The home side had hardly touched the ball when Logica took the lead in the second minute. A sweet passing move involving five players set the tone for the remainder of the game. The interchanges climaxed with Lambert being put clear with a sublime pass. Most would have put their money on the leading marksman to add to his tally, but somehow the keeper managed to get a hand to his well-placed shot. No worries though, as Abbott showed a good striker's instinct to follow up and tap home for his first of the season.
Suddenly it all came together. The frustrations and misfortunes of the last five weeks evaporated as every player joined in this total football carnival which saw Logica go 3-0 up before the quarter- hour arrived. The second goal resulted from another good, incisive move down the right. Johnson, playing up front for the first time in his career, held the ball up like an old hand, and at just the right instant slipped a square pass to Hatton, supporting from full-back. Hatton swivelled and shot in one movement sending a low shot goalwards. The keeper again did well to get to the ball, but the power of Hatton's drive carried it over the line. Finally Fate had taken a Sunday off. The third goal was orchestrated by Sidaway. A delicate pass inside the full-back found Abbott and the Oakway centre-half on a collision course for this 50-50 ball. Quite remarkably Abbott notched his second first of the day as he won this crunching tackle and emerged with the ball. A first time left- footed cross picked out Johnson at the far post, who once again looked the part as he crashed the ball home on the half-volley.
At this point Logica eased off a bit and chances became fewer in number. Still there was no threat to Wildsmith's goal, the Logica number one being merely a spectator. It was nearly the end of the first half when a fourth goal really should have been added. There was nothing sophisticated about the build-up as a huge kick from Wildsmith cleared the Oakway back line. Abbott anticipated well and bore down on goal, but sadly his touch let him down as he knocked the ball too far forward and the keeper was able to pounce.
After ten or so minutes slumber after the interval, the giant once more awoke. A strong run down the left by Toman reached the bye-line. The shaven-headed full-back's pass to Abbott was met by twinkling toes which dazzled two defenders before a curling shot just grazed the outside of the post. A Lambert shot straight at the keeper, and a Hatton screamer just past the post, provided equally close shaves for Oakway, before the fourth goal finally arrived. It was Johnson again holding up the ball and laying it back via Mitchell to Lambert out left which was the catalyst. Woolhouse of all people was on the end of the cross, and although his angled header was blocked by the keeper, the marauding Hatton was on-hand to side-foot home.
Logica briefly appeared to become dizzy at the heights they had reached, and Oakway were able to create a number of half- chances. One appeared net-bound but Wildsmith, despite having had nothing to do for an hour, was as alert as ever, and swift reflexes averted the danger. Sidaway showed just why he has made such a difference since taking on the captaincy by making two quick substitutions to rekindle the Logica appetite, and these had an instant impact. Duff had already made a number of important interceptions in his first few minutes on the field, but after a well-anticipated tackle, he also showed good vision to send Woolhouse speeding down the right wing. Classic Logica counter-attacking was seen once more as Woolhouse cut a perfect first time square pass into the penalty area for Lambert to run onto and power a low shot into the corner of the net. One touch football to rival the best.
The sixth goal was of a different ilk altogether, but Toman's solo effort combining strength, pace and skill was possible the best of the match. Winning the ball in his own half he fed Abbott and carried on running. A simple return pass found Toman power past one defender, glide inside a second, and place a right-foot shot precisely between keeper and near post. A glitch occurred when Oakway scored a consolation goal from a corner (Surely not?!? Ed), but Logica had the last word with another cleverly crafted goal in the last minute. Hatton bursting forward once more fed a short ball into Abbott, who made as if to play a return but instead wheeled away from his marker and hit a Dalglish style curler from the corner of the penalty area. The ball was heading just inside the far post when once more the unlucky Oakway goalkeeper made a miraculous save. It was Lambert this time who followed up to score his second and provide a nice symmetry with the goal in the first minute when the roles had been reversed.
